An Allied Health Provider, sometimes referred to simply as a "mid-level", is a clinical medical professional who provides patient care. Mid-levels include Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA).

In West Virginia, Nurse Practitioners function in collaboration with a licensed physician and deliver primary health care to patients. They also assess, diagnose, and treat illnesses, injuries, and diseases. They may establish and execute management plans for acute or chronic disease or illness as well as counsel patients on how to prevent disease and illness and promote good health. They are granted prescriptive authority within their specialized scope of practice.

Physician Assistants are state-licensed healthcare professionals who practice medicine with physician supervision. Physician Assistants are able to perform an extensive range of medical services from entry-level primary care to highly technical specialty procedures in nearly every medical healthcare setting. They are also granted prescriptive authority within their specialized scope of practice.
